About Catherine McKinnon
Born in Halifax and raised in Inverness County, Cape Breton, Catherine McKinnon creates her paintings in the studio loft of a reclaimed, 19th century, post-and-beam barn which her family saved from the wrecking ball.
Her style of painting is loosely representational, verging on semi-abstract. Working primarily with oil paint, she captures the pared down essence of subjects found on sea and on land in the coastal province of Nova Scotia, situated on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.
After completing her studies in Drawing and Painting at Rhode Island School of Design in 2009, she moved back home to Purcells Cove near Halifax and spends the warm weather seasons sailing on her family's gaff-rigged, wooden schooner, Comet II. The sights she sees from the deck of her schooner provide inspiration for many of her paintings.
Her latest paintings can be viewed in person by appointment in the gallery at "The Barn". To arrange your studio/gallery visit, email: catherine.mckinnon@gmail.com; by phone/text: 1-902-456-1654; or by Instagram DM.
